As Elizabeth wandered she had been gathering nuts and a few flowers to bring home. With a handful of acorns, Elizabeth stepped up to peer into the clearing. In the middle she saw the hindquarters of a white horse. As she watched, she saw its head moving around.
Curiously and carefully, Elizabeth stepped to the side, just outside the perimeter. She wanted to see better, without spooking the animal. Soon Elizabeth drew in a deep breath, as she saw that the creature was using its single horn to dig into the forest floor. Watching, Elizabeth realized it was making shapes in the forest floor. After a few minutes the beautiful white animal lifted and turned its head to stare at her, then trotted silently off.
Amazed and confused, Elizabeth waited a minute and then entered the clearing. The unicorn had sketched out what looked like small garden plots. Elizabeth wondered if they really were for cultivation, and what a unicorn might be growing inside a forest.
After staring, thinking, and wondering, Elizabeth planted some of the seeds and acorns she had collected earlier in holes she dug in the plots, wondering if they would be removed or eaten, or have a chance to grow.
Then she returned home to see her family, knowing she would not tell them about her strange encounter.
